Symbiotic Earth
How Lynn Margulis rocked the boat and started a scientific revolution
About the Film
Lynn Margulis was a biologist whose ideas were dismissed for years before they changed how science understands life. She argued that complex cells, including the ones that make up our own bodies, arose when separate bacteria merged and began living together. Today that idea, symbiogenesis, is a cornerstone of biology.
Margulis also worked with James Lovelock on the Gaia hypothesis: the idea that living things and their environment form a self-regulating system that keeps Earth habitable. Symbiotic Earth, directed by John Feldman, tells her story and explores what it means to see life as built on cooperation rather than only competition.
Why We’re Sharing It
At Bio4Climate, we believe restoring the web of life is one of our most powerful climate solutions. Margulis’s work shows how deeply connected all living things are, which is the foundation of everything we do.
