In 2021, the Gujarat Forest Department, along with conservation partners, reintroduced Indian grey hornbills to Gujarat’s Gir National Park, a landscape the species had disappeared from for more than 50 years. Five years on, the birds are nesting and raising chicks for the fourth year running.
Hornbills need old, hollow-bearing trees to nest and a steady supply of fruit nearby, so its return signals that the surrounding forest itself is recovering, not just the bird population.
