Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography on Climate Change for Young People

Nature, Biodiversity, Extreme Weather and the Climate Crisis

The books in this bibliography are for teachers, parents, counselors, librarians, and anyone dealing with the rising anxieties about climate among young people everywhere.  The stories are multicultural, include strong female as well as male characters, and a few are available in other languages. Stories have been selected that model values such as cooperation, reflection and mutual respect.

Stories for the younger children emphasize our place in an inter-dependent natural world and introduce weather events such as hurricanes, floods and extreme heat. Stories for Grades 3 -5 include children who help protect other species or ecosystems, and stories where children experience severe weather events safely. Lists include climate heroes/ecosystem restorers such as Wangari Matthai, John Todd, as well as ordinary citizens and children.

Novels in the Grade 6 – 8 list have main characters who experience or are aware of problems with pollution and extreme weather who are consciously trying to make a difference. Novels in the Grades 9 – 12 group include stories about surviving after extreme events, searching for friends and families, and living in a changed world. These are inspiring, not dystopian, novels.

Please note: We are offering the bibliography on a sliding scale from 20 to 50 dollars. If you would like to send copies of the Annotated Bibliography to colleagues or friends, we would greatly appreciate if you would pay for those extra copies below, or refer people to this page for payment.  We are a small non-profit doing big things on a shoestring budget, and every bit helps!

Many thanks!
