At the heart of climate action is a fundamental question: Who controls the land, and how is it cared for? In recognition of Indigenous Women’s Day in New Mexico, Indigenous leaders, youth, and activists gathered to reaffirm what many scientists increasingly recognize, that protecting Indigenous sovereignty and listening to leadership are critical to safeguarding biodiversity and mitigating climate change. “It is time to restart our sacred relationship with the land and honor our matriarchal societies,” said Jolene Tsinnijinnie (Navajo and Kewa Pueblo).
